What “Excel certified” actually means
The phrase covers three different things, and only one of them is a Microsoft certification.

One more distinction that trips people up. Excel Expert is a single-exam certification — pass MO-211 and you have it. Microsoft Office Specialist: Expert, with no app name, is a stacked credential: it requires the Associate credential (three exams in different programs) plus two Expert exams in different programs3. If a job posting asks for “MOS Expert” it is worth asking which one they mean.
The seven steps, start to finish
- Pick your exam. Take MO-210 if you use Excel for everyday work and want a baseline credential; take MO-211 if you already build lookups, PivotTables and validation rules and want the one that carries weight. MO-211 has no prerequisite — “Related exams: none”2 — so you can go straight there. One caveat: MO-210 is offered in English plus fourteen other languages, MO-211 in English only12.
- Download the objective list and treat it as the syllabus. Microsoft publishes the exact weightings. MO-210: manage worksheets and workbooks 25–30%, manage data cells and ranges 25–30%, manage tables and table data 10–15%, formulas and functions 15–20%, charts 15–20%1. MO-211: workbook options and settings 10–15%, manage and format data 30–35%, advanced formulas and macros 25–30%, advanced charts and tables 25–30%2. - Prepare — the free material is genuinely good. Microsoft’s educator centre publishes exam-preparation study guides for MO-210 and MO-211 as free downloads7. Note that neither exam has a Microsoft Learn training path: MO-210’s page says “No training available for this exam” and MO-211’s says learning paths “are not yet available”12. If you want a timed rehearsal, Certiport’s CertPREP practice tests are $40 for a single title, with up to 30 attempts over a year6.
- Buy a voucher. From the Certiport store, the plain voucher is $104 and the voucher with a retake is $1206. Vouchers are generic across MOS titles — there is no separate MO-210 or MO-211 SKU — so you choose the exam when you book. Testing centres may charge their own fee on top; the store price is the only official US list price published.
- Choose where to sit it. Two options: a Certiport Authorized Testing Center, or remotely through Certiport’s Exams from Home programme, for which all MOS exams are eligible4. Home delivery needs a system check, a webcam and a clear room. (The remote service for MOS is Exams from Home, not the OnVUE product used for other Microsoft exams.)
- Sit the exam. Fifty minutes1, delivered “Live-in-the-Application”4 — you complete real tasks in a real copy of Excel while the software marks the resulting workbook. Nothing is multiple choice. The practical consequence: speed matters as much as knowledge, because you cannot look anything up.
- Get your result, and retake if you need to. Scores come back immediately on a 1–1000 scale. On the pass mark the two official sources do not agree, and we are not going to pretend otherwise — see below. If you fail, you wait 24 hours before the first retake and 48 hours before each one after that. There is no annual cap, and you may retake an exam you have already passed5.
The pass mark: what the sources actually say
Conflicting sources
Certiport’s scoring policy states that scores use a 1–1000 scale and that “the passing value is always equated to 700 on this scale”8. Microsoft’s own scoring page says that Office exam scores are reported on the same 1–1000 scale but that “the actual score you need to pass depends on the specific exam you’re taking”9. Both are current, official and in tension. Plan for 700 as a working target, but do not treat it as a guarantee published by Microsoft — and be sceptical of any site that quotes a single confident number without saying where it came from.

Microsoft itself publishes no dollar figure. Both exam pages say only “Price based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored”12, which is why the Certiport store is the number we quote.
How long it takes
We cannot honestly give you a study-hours figure for MO-210 or MO-211, because Microsoft does not publish one for these exams and we have not run a cohort through them. What we can tell you is the shape of the timeline: the objective lists are short enough to read in an hour, the exam itself is 50 minutes, results are immediate, and a retake needs only a 24-hour wait. The binding constraint is booking a slot, not the paperwork.
On expiry, be careful what you read elsewhere. The Excel Associate certification page carries a renewal-frequency field showing 60 months, but Microsoft publishes no prose statement about these certifications expiring. We report the field and stop there.
Should you do it at all?
That is a different question from how, and it deserves an honest answer rather than an upsell. A MOS certification is a cheap, verifiable, vendor-issued credential that proves you can operate the application under time pressure. It is not a qualification that changes your salary band, and in most analyst and finance hiring it carries less weight than a portfolio or a good answer in a live Excel test. It tends to be worth most to people early in a career, to career changers who need something concrete on a CV, and to anyone whose employer will reimburse the $104.
