Quick answer

“Financial modeling certification” covers three different things. Course-based certificates — CFI’s FMVA® ($497/year), Wall Street Prep’s Premium Package ($499) and BIWS ($297–$497) — bundle training with the provider’s own unproctored exam and are the right choice if you need to learn modeling135. Exam-only accreditations from the Financial Modeling Institute (AFM, $725; a proctored four-hour model build) test skill you already have7. The CFA charter is a multi-year investment credential ($3,520–$4,570 in exam fees, about 300 study hours per level, 4,000 hours of qualifying work) and is not an Excel or modeling certification at all8. Most readers should start with a course-based program and add an FMI exam later if they want independent proof.

Three kinds of financial-modeling credentialCourse-based certificates (CFI FMVA, Wall Street Prep, BIWS) bundle training with an exam and cost roughly 300 to 850 US dollars. Exam-only accreditations (Financial Modeling Institute AFM and CFM) test a timed model build and cost 725 dollars per exam without training. Professional designations (CFA) are multi-year, exam-plus-experience programs costing several thousand dollars and are not Excel-modeling credentials.WHAT “FINANCIAL MODELING CERTIFICATION” CAN MEANCourse-based certificateTraining + provider’s own examCFI — FMVA®$497/yr · 15 core + 3 electives · 70% final examWall Street Prep — Premium Package$499 · ~46 h · F&V Modeling Certification includedBIWS — Core / Premium$297–$497 · exams need 90% · 90-day refundSignal: shows you completed a curriculum.Recognition rests on the provider’s brand.Best when you need the skills, and aline on the résumé is a bonus.Exam-only accreditationTimed model build, no training includedFMI — Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM)$725 · proctored 4-hour 3-statement model buildFMI — Chartered Financial Modeler (CFM)$725 · proctored 4-hour exam · AFM requiredFMI — Foundations$195 · 1-hour multiple choice · digital badgeSignal: independent test of modeling skillunder time pressure. How we compared them

We read each issuer’s pricing, program and policy pages and recorded price and billing model, what is included, how the credential is assessed and at what threshold, stated time, and refund terms, then judged fit by reader profile. We have not enrolled in or sat any of these programs; the exam-difficulty statements are the issuers’ own except where marked as our analysis. Details are on the editorial methodology page.

Three kinds of credential, three different signals

Course-based certificates: you learn, then pass the provider’s test

CFI, Wall Street Prep and BIWS all sell training and award their own certificate when you pass their own assessment. None of the assessments is proctored: CFI’s FMVA final exam is a three-hour, 50-question online test passed at 70%2; Wall Street Prep’s certification is earned through online course exams whose mechanics WSP’s own pages describe inconsistently and whose pass mark WSP does not publish34; BIWS requires 90% on each course exam and says few pass first time6. The value is in the curriculum and the model files, and the certificate is read by employers as evidence of training. We compare the three in detail in CFI vs Wall Street Prep vs BIWS and review the largest in the FMVA review.

Exam-only accreditations: you prove it under time pressure

The Financial Modeling Institute is an accreditation body, not a school. Its Advanced Financial Modeler exam is a proctored, four-hour, remote session in which you build an integrated three-statement model from a case; the Chartered Financial Modeler exam follows it and requires AFM first; a one-hour multiple-choice Foundations exam awards a badge7. AFM and CFM each cost $725 (re-enrolment $300, or $350 with an exam review), with FMI suggesting 50–100 and 75–120 hours of preparation respectively; FMI does not publish pass rates7. This is the credential to add if you already model and want a third party to say so.

Professional designations: a different job, not a different course

The CFA Program is often set against FMVA in search results, but it certifies investment knowledge and ethics across three levels, not spreadsheet skill. Since the April 2025 fee change the one-time enrollment fee is USD 0 and exam registration runs from $1,140 (early) to $1,590 (standard, Level III), so completing all three levels costs $3,520–$4,570 in fees; CFA Institute recommends about 300 study hours per level and requires 4,000 hours of investment-related work over at least 36 months for the charter8. The Level I pass rate for the May 2026 window was 39%8. Choose it because the target role expects it, not as a modeling course. Our FMVA vs CFA guide will treat this decision in depth.

How to choose

  • You need to learn financial modeling from scratch. A course-based program. CFI for breadth and a beginner tier; Wall Street Prep or BIWS if you are aiming at investment banking. Start with CFI vs Wall Street Prep vs BIWS.
  • You already model at work and want a credential that proves it. FMI’s AFM exam. Use a course only to fill gaps.
  • You want the cheapest way to test yourself first. FMI Foundations ($195, one hour) or BIWS Core ($297 with a 90-day refund).
  • Your target role lists CFA. That is a separate decision with a separate budget; a modeling course can still be a useful complement for the Excel work the role involves.
  • You mainly need advanced Excel, not modeling. Consider the MOS Excel Expert exam instead — see Excel certifications compared.

Verdict

For most readers the sequence is: a course-based program first (CFI if you want breadth, Wall Street Prep or BIWS for the IB sequence), then an FMI exam if you want an independent test. Treat the CFA as a career decision rather than a modeling credential.

Career changer / student
CFI FMVA Self-Study, or BIWS Core if you want a refund window. Budget for finishing within a year.
Aspiring banker or valuation analyst
Wall Street Prep Premium Package or BIWS Premium.
Working FP&A or corporate finance analyst
FMI AFM for proof; a targeted course only for the modules you lack.
Skip all of these if
Your employer runs in-house modeling training, or the role you want asks for a CPA or CFA rather than modeling skill.

What would change our view

Proctoring at any of the course-based providers, published pass rates from FMI, or changes to CFI’s refund and renewal terms would each change how we position these programs. We re-check prices, access terms and exam rules quarterly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best financial modeling certification?

It depends on what you need it to do. To learn modeling with a certificate at the end, CFI’s FMVA (breadth), Wall Street Prep (investment-banking sequence) or BIWS (cheapest, refundable) are the main options. To prove existing skill under exam conditions, the Financial Modeling Institute’s AFM is the only widely available proctored option.

Is a financial modeling certification worth it?

Course-based certificates are worth their $300–$500 if you will finish the curriculum and use the models; the certificate alone carries modest weight. Exam-only accreditations are worth $725 if you already model and want independent evidence. Neither replaces work experience.

Is the CFA a financial modeling certification?

No. The CFA Program certifies investment analysis knowledge and ethics over three exam levels plus 4,000 hours of qualifying work. Financial modeling in Excel is a small part of it.

Which financial modeling certifications are proctored?

The Financial Modeling Institute’s AFM and CFM exams are proctored. CFI, Wall Street Prep and BIWS assess online without live proctoring.

How much does a financial modeling course cost?

On the issuers’ pages in September 2026: BIWS Core $297, CFI Self-Study $497 per year, Wall Street Prep Premium Package $499, BIWS Premium $497, CFI Full-Immersion $847 per year, FMI AFM exam $725. All except FMI showed promotions at the time.
