MOS Excel Expert (MO-211) Exam Guide: Objectives, Cost, Scoring and How to Prepare

What the exam is

MO-211 is Microsoft’s advanced Excel exam for the current, subscription version of Excel (“Microsoft 365 Apps”). Passing it earns a single certification, Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps)¹. The exam is written by Microsoft and delivered by Certiport, part of Pearson VUE, at authorized testing centers or remotely through Certiport’s “Exams from Home”⁵. It is currently offered in English only¹.

Two naming traps are worth clearing up. First, “Excel Expert” (one exam) is different from “MOS Expert” (a stacked credential that requires the MOS Associate credential plus two Expert exams, five exams in all)⁷. Second, MO-211 is the Microsoft 365 Apps successor to MO-201 (Excel Expert, Office 2019); Microsoft still lists MO-201 with no retirement date, but the 365 Apps exam matches the Excel most people use⁸.

The weightings tell you where the marks are: more than half of the exam is data management and formulas. Candidates who are strong on PivotTables but weak on conditional formatting with formulas, custom number formats and data validation tend to lose points in the largest group.

Who should take it

MO-211 is aimed at people who already use Excel for analysis: accountants, financial and business analysts, operations and data staff, and trainers. If you routinely write lookup formulas, build PivotTables and have at least recorded a macro, the Expert exam is within reach with a few weeks of targeted practice. Exam structure, scoring and retakes

• Length: 50 minutes for every Microsoft 365 Apps MOS exam³.
• Format: Certiport’s “Live-in-the-Application” testing — the exam launches a real copy of Excel and you complete tasks in project files⁵. Microsoft’s page describes it as having “interactive components”¹.
• Scoring: reported on a scale of 1 to 1,000. Certiport’s scoring policy states that “the passing value is always equated to 700 on this scale”⁴; Microsoft’s scoring page says that for Office exams the score needed “depends on the specific exam you’re taking”⁹. Treat 700 as the working target.
• Retakes: if you fail, you must wait 24 hours before the second attempt and 48 hours before each subsequent attempt; there is no annual limit, and you may retake an Office exam you have already passed¹⁰.
• Validity: Microsoft publishes no prose expiry rule for MOS certifications. The Excel Associate certification page lists a “Renewal Frequency” of 60 months; the MO-211 exam page shows no such field¹.

Cost and registration

Microsoft’s page states only that the price is “based on the country or region in which the exam is proctored”¹. The official US prices come from the Certiport Store⁶:

To register, buy a voucher (or pay a testing center directly), create a Certiport account, and either book a seat at a Certiport Authorized Testing Center or schedule an Exams from Home session; the from-home option runs the exam in a virtual machine with a live proctor⁵. Students and educators schedule through Certiport as well¹. Testing centers set their own fees, which may differ from the store price.

How to prepare

1. Download the official skills outline and work through it line by line. Microsoft’s MO-211 outline lists every objective under the four groups². Mark each item as “can do without thinking”, “can do slowly” or “cannot do”. Typical gaps are formula-based conditional formatting, custom number formats, the Consolidate feature and Scenario Manager, the specialised chart types, and the newer functions the outline names (LET, XLOOKUP, IFS, SWITCH, FILTER, SORTBY, RANDARRAY).
2. Use Microsoft’s free exam-prep materials. Microsoft publishes a downloadable “Microsoft Excel Expert (Microsoft 365 Apps) exam prep study guide” course package for MO-211 on its educator center, with lessons, activities and assessments¹¹. There is no Microsoft Learn learning path for the exam¹.
3. Practise in the application, not from video. The exam is hands-on. For each objective, do the task in Excel from memory, including via the ribbon and via keyboard, because the exam does not care how you get there but does care that you finish in time.
4. Run the official practice tests in timed mode. Certiport’s CertPREP practice tests (powered by GMetrix) have a Training Mode with step-by-step feedback and a Testing Mode that mimics the real exam’s timing¹². Move to Testing Mode as soon as you can, and book the exam when you pass practice tests comfortably above 700 on consecutive attempts.
5. Book with a retake option if you are not sure. The $120 voucher with retake costs $16 more than a plain voucher and saves $88 if you need a second attempt⁶.

Practice tests and courses

Start with the official CertPREP practice tests ($40 for the Excel Expert title, or $75 for all MOS titles in the US)⁶. How difficult is it?

Common mistakes

• Studying PivotTables and ignoring the 30–35% data-management group. Weight your time by the outline, not by what you enjoy.
• Learning only one route to each task. Fluency in both ribbon and keyboard paths saves time; the clock is the real opponent in a 50-minute hands-on exam.
• Skipping the newer functions. The outline names LET, XLOOKUP, IFS, SWITCH, FILTER, SORTBY and RANDARRAY²; candidates who learned Excel before 2020 often have gaps here.

• Assuming a 70% mark is enough. Scores are scaled, and practice-test percentages are not the same as the 1–1,000 scale. Aim well above the passing value.

MOS Excel Associate (MO-210) covers core skills and is the sensible first exam if the Expert objectives look unfamiliar; it is not a prerequisite.
